How to find the right cartridge for your printer
The quickest way to find the correct cartridge is to match two things: your printer's full model number and the cartridge or drum code printed on the item or its box. If you have both, you can order with confidence. If you are not sure, send us a photo of both and we will help you find the right fit before you buy.
Why the right match matters
Printer cartridges that look almost identical are often made for different printers. A cartridge that is close but not exact may not click into place, may not be recognised by the printer, or may not feed ink or toner correctly. Matching the codes properly the first time saves you a return and gets you printing sooner.
Step 1: Find your printer's full model number
Use the complete model number, not just the brand or range. For example, Canon i-SENSYS MF445dw rather than only Canon or i-SENSYS. You will usually find it:
- on a label on the front or top of the printer,
- on a sticker at the back or underneath,
- in your printer's settings or information menu,
- on the original box or the purchase invoice.
Step 2: Match the cartridge or drum code
Every cartridge has its own code, separate from the printer's model. It is printed on the cartridge itself and on its box. Examples look like Canon 054H, HP 207A or Brother TN-2480. Order by this exact code, including any letter at the end, because those letters often signal a different yield or colour.
Tip: the same printer can take more than one cartridge, for example a separate black and colour, or a standard and a high yield version. Check which one you actually need before ordering.
Ink, toner or a drum: which does your printer use?
- Ink is used in inkjet printers.
- Toner is used in laser printers.
- A drum transfers the image onto the page in a laser printer. Some laser printers use a separate drum unit, while others build the drum into the toner cartridge. Check your model before ordering a drum on its own.
Original cartridges and page yield
We focus on original cartridges from the printer manufacturers. Page yield figures, for example 3,100 pages, are test based estimates. Your real results depend on how much of each page you cover, your print settings and your usage. Photographs and dense pages use more ink or toner than light text.
If a printer came with starter cartridges, those can have a lower yield than the replacements you buy separately, so it is normal to replace them sooner.

Common questions
Can I use a cartridge from a similar printer?
Only if the cartridge code is listed as compatible with your exact printer model. A similar looking cartridge is often made for a different machine, so always match by code.
My printer does not recognise a new cartridge. What should I do?
Check that the code matches your model and follow the supplied installation steps. Note any error message and contact us. Please do not force or modify the cartridge while we check the issue.
What if I order the wrong item?
If you change your mind or ordered the wrong cartridge, you can request a return within 14 calendar days of delivery or collection, provided the item is unused, complete and in resalable condition with seals intact. See our Returns policy for the full detail.
