Choosing a multifunction printer

A multifunction printer, sometimes called an MFP or all in one, combines printing, scanning and copying in a single machine, and many also send and receive faxes. Here are the main points to weigh up before you choose.

Inkjet or laser

Inkjet multifunction printers suit home and light office use, including colour photos. Laser multifunction printers suit higher volumes and text heavy printing, and are available in mono or colour. Think about what you print most.

How much you print

If you print often, look at the cartridge yield for the models you are comparing, since this affects how frequently you replace consumables. Remember that yield figures are estimates and vary with your usage.

Colour, connectivity and size

  • Colour: decide whether you need colour, or whether mono is enough for your documents.
  • Connectivity: consider how you will connect, for example by cable or over a network, so it fits how you work.
  • Space: check the footprint and paper capacity for where the printer will live.

Running cost

The purchase price is only part of the cost. The ongoing cost comes from the ink or toner the printer uses, so it helps to check the cartridge codes and yields before you commit.
